The Art of Living Foundation is a volunteer-run organization. This means that even their digital presence has been designed and developed by volunteers across different geographies.

We were brought on board to fix the fragmented visual design that was an inevitable outcome of a decentralized process.

The Problem

Many academically gifted students miss out on opportunities due to financial constraints, limited by low credit scores or lack of collateral, making bank loans inaccessible.

These youngsters need trustworthy funding options that can help their dreams come true.

The Constraints

  • Include all the legalese involved in a loan application without making it seem like legalese.

  • Simplify and break down an unavoidable long-winded process without making it feel cumbersome.

  • Come across as an approachable friend but without sounding too casual and fun or people won’t trust you with money.

We used Lego to make our point and it worked.

What Research Revealed

  • An education loan is a decision for the entire family, not just the individual.

  • Students can independently manage loan application processes only if it is demystified and less intimidating.

  • People trust banks over NBFCs since the former are older institutions and governed by regulations.

The Solution

We knew we had to design for trust. This could only be achieved if we...
  • Dumbed it down

  • Educated the users with bite-size content

  • Gamifed the experience

  • Leveraged principles of persuasion design

  • Were brutally honest about the fine print

We thought our designs were all that and a bag of chips until users said that…

  • They don’t want anyone calling them as soon as they register BUT they also want to be able to reach someone ASAP

  • The main pitch is that a student needs no collateral BUT the loan eligibility amount shows up with collateral

  • There’s big words that makes one feel that this stuff is serious BUT one does not understand those big words

  • There’s a processing fee to be paid which is fair BUT the user doesn’t know how much it is upfront and that’s not fair

  • The loan covers living expenses which is great BUT I don’t know if that covers cat food.

We also helped the client with their communication strategy

There’s a difference between strategizing for communication that engages vs. informs. Both are important and effective if done well. The 7 keys to an effective communication strategy are:

  1. Land users the right place

  2. Make them open

  1. Make them read

  1. Make them click

  1. Be authentic, conversational and human

  2. Educate the user
